On Thursday, November 8, 2018, USC Professor Joon-Ho Choi traveled to the STEM Academy of Hollywood to share his innovative research with tomorrow’s engineers and architects. A professor of Building Science at the USC School of Architecture, Choi is shaping the future of built environments through his research on how the quality of indoor environments affects occupants’ health and quality of life.
In his presentation entitled, “Human-Building Integration as a Principle of Healthy Buildings,” Professor Choi described how architects today prioritize the quality of occupants’ experience of indoor environments in addition to fielding concerns over buildings’ energy efficiency. According to Choi, “The next generation of buildings should support human health and productivity as well as the highest level of environmental sustainability.” By considering the quality of the indoor environment—the condition of the air as well as the thermal, acoustic, and lighting conditions—Professor Choi’s lab designs “healthy buildings” that should result in healthier and happier occupants.
To better realize these innovations in building technology, Professor Choi fosters an interdisciplinary approach in his research. He is collaborating with USC Viterbi Professor of Electrical Engineering and Director of the Center for Cyber-Physical Systems and the Internet of Things, Bhaskar Krishnamachari, an expert in deploying sensors to study the complex interactions between environments and the people who inhabit them.

In speaking to Ms. Sonia Sanchez’s Civil Engineering and Architecture students at the STEM Academy, Professor Choi not only exposed them to exciting applications of the STEM concepts they are learning and demonstrated the collaborative nature of engineering research. But he also modeled a college and career pathway the students of the STEM Academy might also pursue--one that will lead to a better indoor and outdoor environment for us all.
